Bernina 640, Day 1

January 17, 2011

I unpacked my new Bernina 640 today.  I’m doing a quilt project for Quilters Newsletter and it needs to go in the mail tomorrow.  The quilting needed to be done so as soon as I had the machine plugged in I threw on the free-motion foot and dove in.  There’s so much to learn about this machine, but so far I love how smooth it is — my quilting is already improved.

And here’s a really cool thing: I was quilting along, then realized I had forgotten to drop the feed dogs.  What seemed strange is that I hadn’t felt them running — I had been easily moving the fabric.  When I lifted up the quilt to take a look at the feed dogs underneath, they were down. Apparently, the machine recognizes the free-motion quilting foot when you put it on and automatically drops the feed dogs!  How cool is THAT?!

Hope you’re still enjoying your machine. How are you doing with the BSR?

It’s now the end of June, just read your blog updates. How’s the free motion quilting coming along? I started leaving my feed dogs up when free motion quilting, it just lifts the fabric up a little. With stitch length 0 and width 0 it doesn’t move it any direction. I’ve read that Leah Day is doing the same, and have also read it in someone else book, not sure where.
