The yardage in the kit is based on having fabric 44″ wide and cutting rectangular strips for each template piece that are 1/4″ larger on each side of the template. Let me repeat it: cut rectangular strips. There are a number of good reasons for this, including the fact that since you are probably sewing half of your spirals in mirror image, you will have 4 “righty” triangles and 4 “lefty” triangles for each template. Rectangles will work for either type, so you save yourself the huge headache of having to count and cut 4 of each. And it eliminates the possibility of cutting the wrong direction.
As for size, don’t cut larger than 3/8″ larger on each side: not only will you risk running out of fabric, but the extra fabric will get in your way while you sew. Really: trust the template size.
